These are some of the materials and textures I’ve made for Aluna.
Many of the materials where made in Substance Designer, I tried to make the colors and forms of the materials more stylized to match the visual style of our game.
To accomplish this I simplified the wood grain down to just a few lines on each plank of wood, and I made the color variations look almost more like splatters of paint, this is especially noticeable on the wood floor.
I also exaggerated the colors, making them more vibrant then they’d normally be. And for material I created for the ceiling of the main characters bedroom I added some stars on it to add a kind of whimsical element to it and to make it feel more like a kids room. To contribute to the surreal feeling of the game though I also I added an emission channel to them so that they, along with the image of the moon, glow in a way that mimics the night sky.
For the rug I created the basic design in Adobe Illustrator by looking at detailed rug designs from the time period our game takes place in and simplifying the designs down to just the basic outline of the shapes and using only 2-3 basic colors. Then, since our game has a kind of outlined style to it I took it into Substance Designer and colored it a bit to make it fit more, and to add very subtle texture to make it believable as a rug.
